RedCLARA and LAC4 conduct training for the creation and operation of CSIRTs in academia

The Latin American and Caribbean CyberCapacities Center (LAC4) and RedCLARA, with the support of the Cybersecurity Group of the RNIEs of the region, EduLACSeg, will carry out the "Training for the Creation and Operation of CSIRTs in the academic sector", from March 11 to 14, with the aim of empowering the academic sector in the region in its fight against cyber threats

The course will be held in virtual mode and seeks to facilitate the creation and raise the maturity of academic Cybersecurity Incident Response Centers (CSIRTs) in the region. "The differential of this course is that it is totally focused on the area of education and its particularities. Our desire is to train academic institutions to deploy centers capable of facing the specific threats of the sector and academic institutions," explains RedCLARA's Services Manager, Carlos Gonzalez.

The training program will provide a complete introduction to Security Incident Management Teams (CSIRT/CERT/SOC) with a focus on the academic sector: its organization, operation and basic technical issues. An introduction to CSIRT services and CSIRT maturity is included. At the end of the course, participants will be able to understand the functions of Security Incident Management teams, their organization and operation.

The training will benefit nearly 60 organizations, represented by 85 registrants from a total of 18 countries. In line with the objectives defined by RedCLARA in its new gender strategy and the support of the organizations involved, more than 30% of the registrants are women. "This is a good first step in our search for more equity and I believe that this group of institutions can continue to contribute to help close the gaps in specialized professionals and gender," says Gonzalez.

The alliance between RedCLARA and LAC4 was consolidated in 2023, with the integration of the regional advanced network to the initiative implemented by the EU CyberNet project and financed by the European Union. EU CyberNet is coordinated by the Estonian Information Systems Authority (RIA), with whom RedCLARA also has a cooperation agreement. The objective of RedCLARA's participation in LAC4 is to strengthen bi-continental cooperation and technical assistance for the development of cybersecurity resilience and secure digital transformation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
