The Americas Research and Education Networks (AMREN) - CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA

The Research and Education Networks of the Americas support their communities through powerful, technical and community-driven strategic collaborations that support innovative research and education, benefiting students, teachers, researchers and communities in North and South America.

About the AMREN

Research and Education Networks of the Americas support their communities through powerful, technical and community-driven strategic collaborations that support innovative research and education, benefiting students, teachers, researchers and communities in North and South America.

CANARIE, Internet2 and RedCLARA have teamed up to highlight the role of the Americas Research and Education Networks (AMRENs); they collectively connect more than 3,100 institutions in the Americas.

These specially designed networks support large data streams that are the basis for cutting-edge research and discovery, and support the needs of a wide range of educational institutions. Because AMRENs are driven by the needs of their communities and are immersed in the high-tech sector, they are constantly evolving infrastructures that support the universal human need to discover, learn and improve.

AMREN in numbers

Collectively, they total 88,500 km of fiber optic cable connecting 3,175 institutions.

All research disciplines are supported, but the Americas NRENs are critical to support research in astronomy, healthcare and climate change, given the large datasets involved, the scientific instruments distributed throughout the Americas and the spirit of ongoing collaboration between research teams.

The AMRENs offer more than 60 services that enable researchers to accelerate the path to discovery.

CANARIE | www.canarie.ca

CANARIE connects Canadians to each other and to the world. Our programs equip researchers, students and start-ups to excel on the global stage. Together with our thirteen provincial and territorial partners, we form Canada's National Research and Education Network (NREN). This ultra-high-speed network connects Canada's researchers, educators and innovators to each other and to data, technology and colleagues globally.

Beyond the network, we fund and promote the development of research software and national efforts to manage data generated from research. To strengthen the security of Canada's research and education sector, we collaborate with our partners in the NREN, government, academia and the private sector to fund, implement and support cybersecurity initiatives. We also provide identity management services to the academic community and We power Canada's start-ups with cloud resources and expertise in emerging technologies.

Established in 1993, we are a not-for-profit corporation, with the majority of our funding provided by the Government of Canada.

Internet2 exists to facilitate mission-critical technology services for U.S. institutions of higher education in support of their educational, research and community service missions. Internet2 enables the power of collaborative scale to make possible vitally important capabilities that no single institution could produce and no other source will provide.

Today, more than 300 universities across the United States are members of this advanced technology consortium and are joined by more than sixty companies and government agencies. Internet2 provides tools, technology, infrastructure and services that are always optimized for the future due to our community-driven development and customization that are designed to meet the unique needs of the research and education community. We are proud to partner with CANARIE and RedCLARA to facilitate and foster this community in the Americas.
