CARLA returns next month

The Advanced Computing System for Latin America and the Caribbean (SCALAC), an allied entity of RedCLARA, organizes the Latin American High-Performance Computing Conference (CARLA), which has been the region's leading international event in the field of high-performance computing (HPC) since 2014. Since its inception, CARLA has been a cornerstone in Latin America's HPC community development and strengthening, providing an essential space for the exchange and dissemination of innovative ideas, techniques, and advances in HPC and its applications.

The conference will take place from September 30 to October 4, 2024, at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile. The event will feature prominent global experts in High-Performance Computing, including Marta Mattoso from the Faculty of Computer Science at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil; Bernd Mohr from the University of Oregon, USA; Bárbara Poblete, a professor at the University of Chile; José María Cecilia from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain; Alberto Ros from the University of Murcia, Spain; Edson Borin from the Institute of Computing at the University of Campinas, Brazil; Ulises Cortes from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain; Mateo Valero, Director of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center; Carlos Jaime Barrios from the Industrial University of Santander, Colombia, and Philipp Navaux from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, and current president of SCALAC.

Carlos Barrios, the General Coordinator of SCALAC, announced that they anticipate over 300 participants this year. “Year after year, CARLA has been a successful platform, and in 2024, it will bring together decision-makers and researchers to address key topics in HPC and its support for artificial intelligence. AI is crucial for Latin America as it drives innovation, improves efficiency across various sectors, and strengthens the region’s ability to tackle global challenges such as climate change, public health, and food security,” he emphasized.

CARLA 2024 will offer a variety of pre-conference workshops on key HPC topics. These will include the evolution of advanced computing in Latin America, the use of GPUs or Graphics Processing Units in astroinformatics, energy efficiency in data centers, and applications of computational chemistry. Furthermore, the Women on HPC workshop aims to encourage women's involvement in STEM fields by fostering networking and collaboration. The event will also feature the BioCARLA workshop, focused on combining biology and computing using HPC and big data analysis techniques.

CARLA invites the international community to share their advances in both HPC and the convergence between HPC and artificial intelligence (HPC&AI), two emerging areas that are key drivers for innovation and development. For more information, please visit the website: https://carla2024.org/.

CARLA 2024 promises to be a unique platform to connect researchers, professionals, and academics, driving growth and collaboration in HPC in Latin America and beyond.
