Panama is promoting the creation of an NREN

During the TICAL 2023 conference "Bridges to Transformation: The role of NRENs in the digital transformation of education, research and innovation", held in Panama City this November 13 and 14, national authorities signed a declaration to promote the creation of a National Research and Education Network (NREN).

The declaration was signed by the National Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Eduardo Ortega Barría; the Executive director a.i. of the Center for Hydro-Environmental Innovation, Research and Technology (CITEC), Juan José Pimento; and the Executive director of the National Innovation Agency (AIG). It will also be signed by the Technological University of Panama (UTP). The Executive director of RedCLARA, Luis Eliécer Cadenas, signed as a witness of honor.

Panama seeks to establish a NREN that articulates connectivity and cooperation in science and education among academic and research institutions throughout the country. The SENACYT Secretary said that a robust Internet infrastructure will increase efficiency in the commercial sectors and promote education, scientific research and citizen participation.

The statement highlighted the importance of the advanced connectivity that RedCLARA will provide to the Regional Operations Center of the European Union's Earth Observation Program, Copernicus, in Panama. This collaboration will benefit the country's population with faster access to information, "facilitating more effective responses to emergencies and natural disasters," Ortega Barría added.

The Executive Director of RedCLARA emphasized: "We are very pleased and excited about the steps Panama is taking to build a digital ecosystem to support science, education and innovation. Panama's participation and commitment is very important for our entire community, and TICAL 2023 demonstrates that commitment and enthusiasm. Together, we will move forward in promoting and supporting the country's digital transformation processes, putting them at the service of all of society."
