LA CoNGA Physics Hackathon will bring together more than 100 students to solve problems of social impact with Open Data.

More than 100 students from Latin America registered, representing 8 countries, 30 universities, and more than 20 of knowledge, resulting from the calls of the second edition of the Co-Afina Hackathon, which will be held remotely from October 20 to 22.

In its 2023 edition, the event organized by the LA-CoNGA Physics Project, with the support of RedCLARA, CEDIA, and other entities, poses questions related to open data, education, and the social impact of scientific knowledge, to respond to challenges in areas such as education, health, agriculture, environment, citizenship, governance, and public opinion. These challenges were proposed by individuals and organizations in the previous phase of the Hackathon, which ended on October 7.

During the three days of activities, the participating teams will solve specific challenges, and on the last day, each team will present its solution to a group of interdisciplinary panel of experts from Latin America. The event will offer more than US$2000 in prizes, seminars on datachallenges and virtual visits to major international laboratories..

Co-Afina is a hackathon promoted by LA-CoNGA physics, in which university students in Latin America collaboratively develop solutions to problems related to scientific and educational issues of social impact. The initiative follows international open-access principles.

LA-CoNGA physics is a partnership between 11 universities in Latin America and Europe and five other institutions, including RedCLARA, to build a virtual learning platform in advanced physics in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, under the auspices of the Education, Audiovisual, and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission.
