CARLA celebrates 10th Anniversary and recognizes RedCLARA Support

The flagship High-Performance Computing (HPC) conference in Latin America, CARLA, celebrated its tenth edition with the participation and contributions of members of academics, researchers, experts, and graduate students from around the world, who gathered in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, from September 18-22.

Since 2014, CARLA has been an international conference that aims to provide a forum to foster the growth and strength of the HPC community in the region, through the exchange and dissemination of new ideas, techniques, and research, as well as their application areas.

This year´s keynote presentations were: "Challenges and Opportunities of AI-driven High-Performance Computing", given by Trilce Estrada, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of New Mexico; "Scientific Workflow Management, is Artificial Intelligence the Answer? ", with Ewa Deelman, Director and Research Professor, Institute of Information Sciences, University of Southern California (USC); and "Natural Language and High-Performance Computing Success Stories", by Liliana Barbosa Santillan, President, Data Mining Engineering Group.

In addition, a series of panels, special colloquiums, and workshops were held on various topics such as best practices in HPC management, Latin American women in HPC, HPC, and energy, resource and energy efficiency in data centers, circular architectures and trends in advanced computing, quantum computing, and biology, biomedicine, and informatics.

The RedCLARA delegation that participated in the event, composed of the Academic Relations Manager, Tania Altamirano, and the Services Manager, Carlos Gonzalez, and representatives of National Research and Education Networks (NREN), attended various panels, critical sessions, and working groups, as well as plenary sessions.

The Academic Relations Manager of RedCLARA was one of the panelists in the "EuroHPCLatam Panel: Policy and Global Actions" and a participant in the Latin American Women on HPC meeting.

RENATA's Executive Director, Said Lamk Beltran, participated in the Education panel and also with CUDI Executive Director, Moisés Torres, and RedCLARA's Services Manager participated in the high-level meeting of members of the System for Advanced Computing for Latin America and the Caribbean (SCALAC), which is the main organizer of CARLA and integrates a strategic infrastructure based on an advanced architecture that includes High-Performance Computing (HPC), Scientific and High-Throughput Computing (HTC).

The session included a historical review and information about SCALAC, the RedCLARA support to the initiative and the joint and collaborative work for the development of technical availabilities and capabilities on HPC in the region and its integration and joint work with Canada, the United States and Europe.

As part of the tenth anniversary of CARLA, SCALAC recognized RedCLARA for its work in the region and its support of the conference, which has become the flagship event in its field in the region.

The next CARLA 2024 conference will be held from September 30 to October 4 next year in Santiago, Chile.
