The project for the integration of Latin American VoIP networks on RedCLARA advances

Developed by the Work Group Traffic Exchange Point of Voice over IP, PIT VOIP, this initiative aims to facilitate and enhance communication among researchers and academics in the region through the integration of phone networks available in national networks, NRENs.

VoIPCalls at low cost, fast and from anywhere in Latin America are some of the benefits of the project Traffic Exchange Point of Voice over IP, PIT VoIP Deployment, aimed at researchers and academics in the region.

The initiative is coordinated by the Work Group PIT VoIP of RedCLARA which is led by the Brazilian national network, RNP, and includes the participation of members in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The project objective is to model and implement a traffic exchange point of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) by interconnecting the telephone networks of the NRENs members of RedCLARA.

Among the proposed tasks for its implementation the group has consider the study of the VoIP actions carried out by NRENs gather around RedCLARA, the establishment of a policy on use of services and rules for participation in the PIT, the development and adaptation of the PIT VoIP system, the realization of training sessions for system operators and the development of outreach activities. In addition, it includes installing a pilot service for VoIP traffic exchange and a study of the results.

At present there have been two virtual meetings through the desktop videoconferencing system of RedCLARA VC Espresso. The first, held on August 12th included the presentation and official launch of the project developed by its coordinator, Alex Galhano from RNP. The second, held on September 9th, included the definition of short-term tasks and actions.
