7- 10 November: "Copernicus in LATAM: from Earth Observation to the End User"

Around 50 experts on the European Earth Observation programme, Copernicus, will gather at the event "Copernicus in LATAM: from Earth Observation to the End User", which will take place from 7 to 10 November at the Beauchef Campus of the University of Chile, in Santiago.

The event aims to explore the possibilities of using Copernicus-based data and applications in all sectors. Success stories will be presented by research centers, companies, and government institutions in five thematic areas of interest to Latin America and the Caribbean: monitoring of earth and soil movements; natural and anthropogenic hazards; vulnerability of ecosystems; urban expansion and sustainability; and water.

Among the experts present will be Paola Arellano, Executive Director of the Chilean advanced network, REUNA, and the Executive Director of RedCLARA, Luis Eliécer Cadenas (online), who will participate in the panel discussion "EU-LAC Digital Alliance: Copernicus Regional Strategy", together with Sergio Bandinelli, Coordinator of the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator; Sergio Rovira, Economic Affairs Officer of ECLAC's Division of Productive and Business Development; and Elise Abbes, expert of the D4D Hub LAC. The panel will be held on Thursday 9 November.

The meeting will also be attended by Sergio Rojas, representative of the first prize winning group in the BELLA Hackathon: Copernicus Innovation Development*, which took place between 4 July and 4 August 2023, and was organized by RedCLARA, the BELLA Programme, Copernicus, and the pan-European advanced network, GÉANT.

Rojas will be taking part in the panel "Entrepreneurship with Copernicus", to be held on Friday 10th, where he will have the opportunity to present his winning proposal "Application developed in Google Earth Engine for the visualization of agro-climatic variables and their overlap with polygons of interest". This visualization platform was developed by choosing the ERA5 - Land Monthly Aggregated - ECMWF Climate Reanalysis product from the wide range of products available in the Copernicus programme.

The "BELLA Hackathon: Copernicus Innovation Development" was the first bicontinental innovation activity that aimed to strengthen and make visible the work of research groups from universities and institutions in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe and to propose innovative and creative solutions for the use of Copernicus in the region.
