Mexican Network of Institutional Repositories (REMERI) is reincorporated into LA Referencia

The Latin American Open Science community received good news with the reincorporation of the Mexican Network of Institutional Repositories (REMERI) into LA Referencia. This addition strengthens the organization with a total of 12 member countries.

(Source: LA Referencia) REMERI was created in 2012 with the initial objective of building the technical node that would represent Mexico in LA Referencia. From there until November 2019, the REMERI node was part of this regional effort; and now, after a two-year hiatus for administrative reasons, LA Referencia will once again collect the research products from this node.

This reincorporation is due to the joint work of Carlos Casasús López Hermosa, General Director of the University Corporation for Internet Development 2 - CUDI Mexico; Luis Eliécer Cadenas, Executive Director of RedCLARA and Board of Directors of de LA Referencia.

Casasús detailed the main benefits that Mexico will gain from this decision. “For CUDI and the REMERI community, returning to LA Referencia as a technical node in Mexico allows us to give new impetus to open access to scientific production from high-level Mexican institutions in education and research, contributing to the academic visibility of the authors and researchers from our country, and giving us, as representatives of the National Research and Education Network at RedCLARA, the opportunity to collaborate and join efforts in favor of Open Science in Mexico and Latin America."

In turn, Luis Eliécer Cadenas, Executive Director of RedCLARA applauded the decision that makes the contribution of the LA Referencia project even greater: “RedCLARA celebrates the reincorporation of Mexico into the regional network due to the great importance the country has as a producer of science, technology and innovation, with a large number of capabilities that were relegated and that we will now be able to recover. We are always available and interested in contributing so that countries are always active, functioning, within the scope of this initiative. We just have to celebrate what this reintegration means.”

Finally, Bianca Amaro, president of LA Referencia, highlighted the strengthening that this reincorporation means. “The reintegration of Mexico into LA Referencia through the REMERI Network is very important for our performance as a Latin American bloc in the field of Open Science. As I always say, together we are stronger and we teach everyone the strength and quality of Latin American science. Mexico was one of the countries present in the creation of LA Referencia. For everything, we welcome Mexico with open arms, as if we're meeting an old friend.”
