Universidad Santa María recuperate its place in the National University Network of Chile
ExpiredThe institution will have access to a network of collaborative work and high-speed computing, straitening the work with specialists in science and technology of the most important educational centers of the country.
In a ceremony headed by the Board President of the Chilean national network, REUNA, José Palacios and the Academic Vice President of the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM), Patricio Vargas, this institution of higher education became a full member of the National University Network of Chile.
With this agreement, the University will have access to the most important network in the country integrated by institutions of higher education and research to develop ties of cooperation between the Information and Communications Technologies and its applications.
"When we visualized that the connection to REUNA would help to strengthen our science, technology and education, we realized that we could not be out of the Corporation one more minute," said Academic Vice President of the USM.
Meanwhile José Palacios affirmed that the return of the USM to REUNA is a matter of great satisfaction. "This university came back on an auspicious time for the Corporation, because along with its partners is developing remarkable initiatives supported in collaborative work and networking in areas such as astronomy and high-performance computing, in which Chilean academics have a lot to say."
Representing academics, Luis Salinas, researcher at the Department of Computer and Director of the Center for Technological Innovation in High Performance Computing, expressed: “A connection as the one provided by REUNA will make possible that the work of the university involves significant projects like the one carried out by the physical area with CERN (Switzerland) ". Salinas explained that as part of this joint research the USM academics need to review and distribute large volumes of data (terabytes) to the whole world. He also referred to USM's participation in the project of the National Laboratory for High Performance Computing (NLHPC), leaded by the Universidad de Chile, and that required the integration to REUNA as an essential element.
The Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María was one of the founders of the National University Network in the 90's.

La institución tendrá acceso a una red de trabajo colaborativo y a computación de alta velocidad, permitiendo el trabajo con especialistas en ciencia y tecnología de los más importantes centros educacionales del país.
En una ceremonia encabezada por el Presidente Directorio de la red nacional chilena, REUNA, José Palacios y el Vicerrector Académico de la Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM), Patricio Vargas, esta casa de estudios se incorporó como Socio Pleno de la Red Universitaria Nacional de Chile.
Gracias a este acuerdo, la Universidad tendrá acceso a la más importante red del país integrada por instituciones de Educación Superior y de investigación con el fin de desarrollar lazos de cooperación mediante las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicaciones y sus aplicaciones.
“Cuando visualizamos que la conexión a REUNA nos ayudaría a fortalecer nuestra ciencia, tecnología y educación, nos dimos cuenta de que no podíamos estar fuera de la Corporación ni un minuto más”, afirmó el Vicerrector Académico de la USM.
Por su parte José Palacios destacó que el regreso de la USM a REUNA es motivo de gran satisfacción. “Esta universidad se reintegra en un auspicioso momento para la Corporación, ya que junto a sus socios está impulsando importantes iniciativas sustentadas en el trabajo colaborativo y en red, como es el área de la astronomía y la computación de alto rendimiento, en que los académicos chilenos tienen mucho que decir".
En representación de los académicos, el investigador del Departamento de Informática y Director del Centro de Innovación Tecnológica en Computación de Alto Desempeño, Luis Salinas, señaló: “Una conexión como las que nos proveerá REUNA permitirá que como universidad sigamos trabajando en proyectos de gran envergadura como el que lleva adelante el área de física con el CERN (Suiza)”. Salinas explicó que como parte de esta investigación conjunta los académicos de la USM requieren revisar y distribuir grandes volúmenes de datos (terabytes) a todo el mundo. También se refirió a la participación de la USM en el proyecto del Laboratorio Nacional de Computación de Alto Rendimiento (NLHPC), que lidera la Universidad de Chile, y para el cual era indispensable integrarse a REUNA.
La Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María fue uno de los socios fundadores de Red Universitaria Nacional en la década del 90.
