In recognition of the growing, innovative collaboration between Mexico’s research and education network, the Corporación Universitaria para el Desarrollo de Internet (CUDI), and CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN), CUDI and the individual who has led CUDI since its inception, Carlos Casasús, were awarded the CENIC 2020 Innovations in Networking Award for R&E Network Partner.

The Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Postgraduate and Research of Engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE-UFRJ), and the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing (LNCC), both from Brazil, join forces with SCALAC and make available to researchers and scientists, free of charge, the data processing capabilities of their supercomputers for research in search of the solution to the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

In order to contribute to the search for a cure for the Coronavirus, the National Research and Education Networks in Latin America, united through RedCLARA, and in partnership with SCALAC (Advanced Computing System for Latin America and the Caribbean), made available to researchers and scientists data processing capacity for research projects for free as a way of finding solutions to the pandemic.

The alliance with Cisco is part of the initiative established by the Latin American academic networks, united in RedCLARA, to contribute to the search for the cure of COVID-19 and to enhance remote work and study. Cisco WebEx Meetings licenses will be offered for a period of 90 days to the aforementioned institutions and include the WebEx Meetings, WebEx Teams and Control Hub programs. Up to one thousand licenses will be distributed so that users can manage (create, invite and record) sessions for each institution.

The University Corporation for Internet Development (CUDI Mexico) and its director Carlos Casasús, who also served as president of the RedCLARA Board of Directors until the beginning of 2020, were honored with the "CENIC Innovations in Networking Awards" for their contributions to the development of research and education in Mexico and in the world. The recognition was announced on March 11.
