Internet2 Celebrates its 20th Anniversary

internet2Research and Education Leaders will convene in Chicago for 2016 Global Summit, where the operator of the USA largest research and education infrastructure will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

This year's Global Summit, May 15-18 in Chicago, will commemorate the rich 20 year history of Internet2, a member-owned advanced technology community founded by the USA leading higher education institutions in 1996. The event is being hosted by Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Chicago and Loyola University Chicago and will include participants from 39 countries, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico, members of RedCLARA.

The theme for the 2016 Global Summit in Chicago – site of the first official meeting that eventually led to the formation of Internet2 - will focus on honoring the members who have shaped and developed Internet2 over the past 20 years, and showcasing visionaries whose work and strategies will shape the next 20 years for the entire Research and Education community. To reach it, the event will feature sessions on a variety of timely and relevant topics, including innovations in advanced networking and services, cloud-based research, education and service missions, cyber security and trust and identity in education and research, and healthcare and life sciences.

Internet2 actually provides a collaborative environment for U.S. research and education organizations to solve common technology challenges, and to develop innovative solutions in support of their educational, research and community service missions. It also operates the nation’s largest and fastest, coast-to-coast research and education network, with Internet2 Network Operations Center powered by Indiana University. Internet2 serves more than 90,000 community anchor institutions, 305 U.S. universities, 70 government agencies, 42 regional and state education networks, 84 leading corporations working with our community and more than 65 national research and education networking partners representing more than 100 countries.
