Aiming to strength the cooperation and the joint work between the two academic networks, Dave Lambert, CEO of Internet2, and Jose Palacios, president of the Directory of REUNA Chile, signed on Thursday, October 13, a Memorandum of Understanding.

(Source: REUNA) With the signing, both academic networks have pledged to focus efforts to collaborate in three main areas.

In the area of infrastructure, designing a global network architecture that interconnects both networks, in order to respond more efficiently to the connectivity needs of researchers and teachers of its member institutions and maximize its participation in the global research community and education . Moreover, the idea is to enhance the exchange of experience and network management tools, and the development, launch and integration of monitoring technologies of network performance to troubleshoot local and international data flows.

In the area of services, to boost the operating models of national identity management systems (federations) to facilitate collaboration in research and education, and the shared use of resources between users. Similarly, it is expected to use the federated identity management for sharing services that operate on the network and the establishment of banks to cooperate in emerging networking technologies.

In the area of human capital and collaborative projects, to identify opportunities for participation in meetings, workshops and conferences organized by REUNA and Internet2 (together or individually) and encourage the successful collaborations between research and education communities.

According to Paola Arellano, Executive Director of REUNA, the alliance reaffirms the importance of global collaboration and the role of the networks for research and education not only in the astronomy context, but also in different fields of scientific and academic work between the US and Chile. "We seek to further stimulate collaboration by creating greater accessibility and openness environments, in which researchers and teachers from partner institutions can share, for example, resources and data repositories, intellectual capital, open source software, among others".
