RedCLARA strengthened bonds during Internet2 Fall 2012 Member Meeting

If TNC is the major conference of the European academic networks, Internet2 conferences play that role in North America. And the October 2012 edition was no exception; in the activity the leaders of the NRENs of Brazil (RNP), Chile (REUNA) and Mexico (CUDI), and of RedCLARA marked its presence. The Executive Director of RedCLARA participated in two relevant panel sessions.

Dr. Salem Alagtash, Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN); Florencio Utreras,RedCLARA; Colleen Wint-Smith, Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network, CKLN; Dr F.F. Tusubira, Ubuntunet Alliance; Michael Stanton, Brazilian National Research and Education Network, (RNP)

Between September 30 and October 4 it was held in Philadelphia, USA, the Internet2 Fall Members Meeting 2012 (last edition of the biannual conferences, as from 2013 they will be annual), which brought together representatives of the regional advanced networks of Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Caribbean and Europe and of many of the NRENs of some of the countries of those continents, including Brazil, Chile and Mexico, all members of the Latin-American advanced network.

RedCLARA was represented by its Marketing Manager, Cristian Garretón, and its Executive Director, Florencio Utreras, who participated in two relevant panel sessions.

On Monday October 1st, RedCLARA’s Executive Director participated in the panel "25 Years of Internet Globalization" with Claudio Allochio (GARR, Italy), Larry Landweber (GENI, USA), Stephen Wolf (Internet2, USA) and the leader of the session, Michael Stanton (RNP, Brazil). This event was an opportunity for some of the people active in networking 25 years ago to recall the beginnings of the global Internet, and draw parallels with the current globalization of new networking activities. The presentations given in this panel are published at: http://events.internet2.edu/2012/fall-mm/agenda.cfm?go=session&id=10002585&event=1149.

The overall outlook of the future of the NRENs was the subject of the panel in which participated Utreras in October 2nd, together with Salem Al-Agtash (ASREN, Arab states), Carlos Casasus (CUDI, Mexico), Valentino Cavalli (TERENA, Europe) and Michael Enrico (GÉANT / DANTE, Europe). Where will NRENs be five years from now (or beyond), which services will they be providing and which role will they play in the research and education environment?, were some of the questions addressed by the experts.
