Puebla will install the first optical fiber rings in Mexico

fibra opticaWith an initial investment of 1.5 million dollars, the project runned between BUAP and INAOE is expected to be completed in four months. Its main objective is to take down costs in connectivity services, and provide the same to other institutions interested in the LNS services.

(Source: CUDI) The National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) and the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP), will sign an agreement to have 200 km of optical fiber that will connect different institutions to the Laboratorio Nacional de Supercómputo.

After informing that BUAP will host the 30th meeting of the University Corporation for Internet Development (CUDI), Humberto Salazar Ibargüen, head of the Computation and Information and Communications Technologies General Directorate of the University, reported that "140 km of optical fiber will link INAOE and the Supercômputo National Laboratory of Southeast Mexico (LNS) to the Gamma Ray Observatory (HAWC) and the Great Millimeter Telescope (GTM); the 60 additional kilometers will be the metropolitan network that will connect all campus of the University and thus interconnect in its entirety to the higher education institutions of Puebla."

In order to reduce the costs of connectivity services and provide the service to other institutions that are interested in the LNS services, the project will end in four months and will have an initial investment of 1.5 million dollars, said Ibarguen.

Carlos Casasús López Hermosa, general director of CUDI, stressed the importance of developing optical fiber communications in the main university campus, as well as research networks similar to those of developed countries, to increase bandwidth.

He further mentioned that CUDI Autumn 2015 meeting will be held on October 22 and 23, and that there will be reported to the entire university community the progress of these projects on the implementation of the new telecommunications law. "We hope that the community of Technology and Informatics over the country visit the city to share experiences and that the development of infrastructure for the benefit of the country continues," he said.
