March 17th: Join the first TICAL Thematic Meeting of the year and meet the Semantic Repository of Researchers Project

Encuentros temáticos TICAL - 17/03/2016

In 2016, the TICAL community cycle of thematic meetings will begin with the presentation of the inter-institutional projects presented in TICAL2015. The first one, scheduled for March 17th, at 15h UTC, invites the entire academic community to meet and join the "Semantic Repository of Researchers" project. The activity will be held by video conference and registration is now open.

The institutions interested in participating in this first TICAL thematic meeting can sign up until the 15th of March. The event will focus on an ecuadorian pilot project in testing phase, the Semantic Repository of Researchers. The initiative is based on the automatic detection of similar areas of knowledge among researchers in Latin America through the use of approaches oriented to the integration of information by using Semantic Web technology.

Today, each IHE (Institution of Higher Education) maintains a repository with data from their researchers and, in some cases, with publications. When it is necessary to propose projects with several researchers in a specific area belonging to different IHEs, the question is: Who works in similar lines of research? Moreover, when the researchers belong to different IHEs in the region, the question is how to create a network of researchers in the same area when you do not know if they exist or, if they do, their location is not known.

To expand the scope of this knowledge base throughout Latin America will enable higher education systems in our region to rely on a repository. This project is intended to encourage interagency collaboration and thus obtain a validated semantic repository with a tool for locating researchers in similar areas that will provide updated information about them, their published articles, magazines where they were accepted, among others. Thus, potentiate the generation of research networks with academic peers in the region, expanding their possibilities and offering to the participating institutions greater opportunities for cooperation and collaboration.
