The opening project of the fiber optic ring for the Nicaraguan Academic Network was offered by the Mexican government through AMEXCID.

Last October 18, in Managua, Nicaragua, the Chairman of RedCLARA and CUDI’s General Director, Carlos Casasús, met with members of the National Council of Universities (CNU), with the CNU Committee of Information and Communication Technologies and the Coordination of the PERI project (Programme for Strengthening Information Research), in order to introduce them to the proposed opening project of a Fiber Optic Ring for the Nicaraguan Academic Network, offered by the Government of Mexico through AMEXCID (Mexican International Cooperation Agency for Development).

The agreements set out in this session were:

  1. CNU will create and organize the "Nicaraguan Broadband University Network " (RUNBA).
  2. The CNU will formulate the "Optical fiber urban ring project for RUNBA" in order to present it to AMEXCID through the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit of Nicaragua, to build the ring and the equipment that will allow the connection of CNU universities to the point of university traffic exchange (located in UNAN-Managua) and the access point to RedCLARA (located in UFINET).
  3. RedCLARA through Carlos Casasús, will support the formulation and management, before the Mexican government, of the " Optical fiber urban ring project for RUNBA"
  4. The CNU will connect the Nicaraguan Academic Network to RedCLARA.
  5. The CNU, with the support of RedCLARA, will promote the use of Nicaraguan Academic Network among academics and universities through the use of telepresence.

Carlos Casasús said that, improving the connectivity of Nicaraguan universities, it will be possible to boost the research and higher education in the country.
