Two new universities join Chile's National Research and Education Network

The Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) and Andrés Bello (UNAB) Universities were incorporated to the National Research and Education Network of Chile (REUNA) last May 28, when the General Assembly of Members of REUNA 2021 took place.

(Source: REUNA) On the occasion, both universities were presented to the other members of the Corporation, which brings together universities, astronomical observatories and research centers, deployed from Arica to Coyhaique. The incorporation of both institutions will favor collaboration between these entities and the other associates of the Corporation, to promote innovation and development of the national science, technology and higher education ecosystem.

Carlos Jerez, dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences, participated on behalf of the UAI, and will also be the Institutional Representative of said house of studies before REUNA. On the occasion, the academic authority pointed out that “it is a pleasure for the University, and in particular for the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences, to be part of this Network. It is a desire that many researchers had for years and since 2019 we began conversations to be able to become part of it, especially catalyzed by our role as a founding partner of the Data Observatory that, as you may know, is soon to make a call for new members of the foundation, and that absolutely required REUNA's infrastructure to be able to operate. So, on behalf of the University, it is really a very strong signal of support for what REUNA is and, obviously, for what the ecosystem associated with it represents, and being part of it pleases us. In addition, the idea is to also expand this connection to our campus in Viña del Mar, and to grow together with all of you. So, on behalf of the Rector, who could not be present, the truth is that we are very happy and we take this association forward in a very good way”.

For her part, Paola Arellano, executive director of REUNA, highlighted that, as was the Data Observatory for the UAI, the main promoter of the entry of UNAB to the Chilean Academic Network, has been the Faculty of Exact Sciences, specially promoted by the Astronomy Unit, a renowned research group with active national and international collaborations. “The incorporation of both universities into REUNA is a reflection of the Corporation's strategy to advance towards an interconnected national science and higher education system, both locally and globally, to promote joint, transversal and interdisciplinary work, in areas of mutual interest, taking advantage of the established collaboration networks, in pursuit of the development of science, technology and national innovation”, affirmed Arellano.

Currently, REUNA is present in 13 regions of the country, connecting more than 400,000 Chilean students, academics and researchers with their peers around the world, through high-speed networks exclusively for the science and education communities.
