Internet2 Global Summit Highlights Global Initiatives for High-Speed Connections

High-speed connections around the world, such as the BELLA project, were the highlight of the programme of the Internet2 Global Summit 2019, one of the main events that bring together networks for education and research. The meeting, organized by the US academic network Internet2, took place from 5 to 8/3 in Washington, USA.

RedCLARA, together with its member networks RNP (Brazil), RENATA (Colombia), CEDIA (Ecuador) and CUDI (Mexico), participated in the Conference, presenting the latin American efforts for science and research in the session "Latin American REN and NREN: Fostering Science and Accelerating LA Innovation", and also the BELLA project in the session "Global 100G: ANA-100G, GÉANT, RedCLARA / RNP, SINET Push for Greater Connectivity Around the Globe" that highlighted innovative initiatives to reach the first network of education and research with capacity of 100 Gb/s in the world.

The Latin American network was represented by its technical manager, Marco Teixeira, who presented the new infrastructure of very high capacity networks that will be built in the region, dedicated to education and research. The project is divided into the deployment of the BELLA-S submarine cable (connecting Fortaleza and Lisbon) and the terrestrial network infrastructure, BELLA-T, which will bring a significant improvement in connectivity in the region.

"This enhancement will ensure that the enormous advancement of transcontinental capacity is evenly distributed throughout the region and that, through synergies with Latin American NRENs, it will increase capillarity and equal access to intercontinental services for all end users of education and research in the region", said Teixeira in his presentation.
