The Copernicus Panama Centre will host the First CopernicusLAC 2024 Hackathon, which will take place from October 11 to October 30, 2024. The main goal of this event is to stimulate creativity and collaboration in the use of Earth observation data in the region. It aims to promote innovation, develop technical skills, foster regional cooperation, and highlight how satellite data can address environmental and socio-economic challenges.

During the hackathon, teams will work on creating practical solutions for disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate change adaptation, food production and distribution, and conservation of biodiversity and threatened habitats. The organizers expect the developed ideas to have a positive and tangible impact on the region.

The event also aims to enhance participants' skills in Earth Observation data analysis, application development, and project management, thus supporting the formation of a skilled workforce in the use of these data. Additionally, it will promote collaboration among participants from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe, contributing to the development of a regional Earth observation community.

Students, young professionals in environmental sciences, geography, data science, and related fields, as well as software developers, data analysts, and data visualization technologists, are invited to participate. We also encourage entrepreneurs, startups, disaster management professionals, policymakers, community leaders, and activists in sustainable development and environmental justice to participate.

The deadline for submitting initial proposals is October 20, and the delivery of final project details and a presentation video is October 27. Finalist teams will be announced on October 29, and the closing ceremony with awards will take place on October 30.
