June 12, 4 PM UTC: Copernicus Chile invites you to a seminar on assessing forest fire damage using satellite imagery
On 12 June at 16:00 UTC, Copernicus Chileinvites the scientific and academic communities, as well as decision-makers, to participate in the online seminar “Wildfire Insight Intelligence: A platform for post-fire damage assessment using satellite imagery”, an event aimed at strengthening regional capabilities in the face of forest fires through the use of cutting-edge technology.
The event will feature a presentation by Diego Ferruzzo, director of Brazil Flying Labs, an initiative that promotes the use of geospatial technologies, drones and innovation to address social, environmental and humanitarian challenges in Latin America.
Forest fires affect vast areas of the region every year, causing the loss of ecosystems of high ecological value and generating significant impacts. In this context, one of the main challenges following these events is to have rapid, accurate and georeferenced information that allows the extent of the damage to be assessed and informs decision-making.
The seminar will present an innovative solution based on satellite imagery from the Sentinel-2 constellation, which provides up-to-date information on the extent and severity of the fires. This free, open-source platform facilitates its adoption by public institutions, researchers and environmental managers, contributing to a more efficient and timely response.
It should be noted that to maximise the potential of satellite data from the Copernicus programme, it is essential for countries and institutions to have advanced connectivity infrastructure. In this regard, access to high-capacity academic networks such as RedCLARA is key, as it enables the efficient exchange, processing and analysis of large volumes of data, thereby strengthening scientific collaboration and evidence-based decision-making.
