2026: CERN to hold its 47th School of Computing in Latin America for the first time

Santiago, Chile, 2025 – The 47th CERN School of Computing will take place from January 11 to 24, 2026, in Santiago, Chile, marking the first time this important academic event has been held in Latin America. The school, organized in collaboration with the Millennium Institute SAPHIR, will take place at the Lo Contador Campus of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, with the support of the Chilean Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation.

The two-week academic program includes approximately 50 hours of classes and practical exercises in the areas of computing for physics, software engineering, and data technologies. Participants who pass the optional final exam will receive a joint diploma from CERN and the School.

The experience is not limited to the classroom: the school also offers a social and sports program that will allow participants to discover the cultural, historical, and natural wealth of Santiago and its surroundings.

The deadline for submitting applications has been extended to October 15, 2025. Results will be announced on October 17, and tuition must be paid by November 19. Students will arrive in Santiago on January 11, and the school will conclude on January 24.

Since its creation in 1970, the CERN School of Computing has trained thousands of young scientists and engineers in scientific computing architectures and data science, fostering a common culture in computing and promoting international mobility and collaboration in large transnational projects.

Its goal is to ensure that scientists master the computing tools necessary for their research and that computer specialists understand the scientific challenges in order to offer appropriate solutions. Graduate students, engineers, and scientists with experience in particle physics, computing, or other related disciplines, especially those affiliated with CERN or collaborating institutions, are eligible to apply.

The call for applications is open to all nationalities, with a special emphasis on participants from Latin America.

Applicants must cover the costs of tuition and travel through their institution or personally. Those with proven financial difficulties may apply for partial sponsorship of tuition fees at the time of application.
