Alberto Pérez, RedIris: NRENs must change paradigm

The search for a sustainable model for Central American NRENs goes through a paradigm shift that aims to seek greater support from governments and not only financed through contributions from universities, according to Alberto Pérez, deputy director of RedIRIS.

Progress in terms of Advanced Internet in Central America are undeniable, however, work has been done to promote it has been mainly the result of a few pioneers or "freakis" said Alberto Pérez, deputy director of the Spanish network, RedIRIS, who visited in El Salvador.

The specialist emphasized that so far there has been support from the governments of the region and financing has become a complex issue, as it relies on the contributions of the member institutions, which sometimes fail in their commitments or decide to retire of the NREN.

"This is an issue that must be carried to the tables of the Government, the advanced internet is a necessity and a benefit to the entire population, not a few, and if governments are not pushing the risk of leaving behind their countries on a map of the world's advanced networks, said Perez, during a meeting with the presidents of Central America NREN in San Salvador.

The Deputy Director of RedIRIS detailed example of this network is supported by the Spanish government and is part of the innovation plans of the country.

All thanks to the networks will grow this year with hired as Executive Directors, with financial support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which will devote in part to promote the benefits of advanced internet.

"It's most important funded institutions knows that I am than my users, you need to rethink the key messages. Be tied to an advanced network speech production model change and innovation in the countries and bring the experience to the table of government, "said Perez, in the context of ensuring the sustainability of NRENs in Central America."This is not to neglect the user must explore the possibility of offering new services," he added.

NRENs in the region are members of RedCLARA, which is funded in part by the ALICE2 (Latin America Interconnected with Europe), an European Commission project. The project finishes in 2012 in its second stage, so that Perez stressed that the NREN should be prepared to make sustainable efforts have been made since 2004.
